About

Earthgauge Radio – environmental news, commentary and interviews on stories in Ottawa, across Canada and around the world.

Your friendly host

Broadcast live every Thursday at 7:00AM on CKCU 93.1 FM in Ottawa with podcasts on iTunes and streamed or downloaded right here on http://www.earthgauge.ca. Hosted and produced by Mark Brooks, an environmental journalist and broadcaster. You can contact me at earthgaugeradio ‘at’ gmail.com.

On Earthgauge Radio, we bring you the best in local, national and international environmental coverage, with a specific focus on Canadian stories and initiatives or organizations working in the Ottawa area.

We are living through a critical and historic period. The decisions we make in the near future will shape the course of decades, if not centuries, to come. Climate change, soaring species extinction rates, resource depletion, habitat destruction all come at a time when the gap between rich and poor is widening and the global economy is in a vulnerable state. We are over-consuming resources, over-producing wastes and still not even meeting the basic needs of many people.

How can we possibly sustain an estimated 9 billion humans who will inhabit the earth in 2050 when the natural environment seems already to be stretched beyond its limits? How can we make global and local economies work in a way that will provide for everyone fairly while respecting the earth’s ecological and resource limitations? What is the way forward and how do we get there?

These are the questions I explore on Earthgauge Radio. Despite these anxious times, increasing numbers of people are recognizing the threats and not waiting for political or corporate leaders to act. Many incredibly dedicated, ambitious and inspiring individuals are forging ahead with progressive ideas and innovative solutions…and having a damn good time doing it! Entrepreneurs, activists, community organizers, big thinkers… people who understand what is at stake and want to do something about it. It’s all hands on deck.

Of course, I live in Ottawa and am particularly interested in local initiatives and organizations. I try to find their stories and bring them to you.

Feel free to leave your comments and suggestions. I welcome input and ideas. If we are to shape a better future and try to resolve some of the extremely serious problems that confront human civilization and the planet, this is a dialogue in which we all must take part.

I note that your list of categories doesn’t include Soil ! Yet this is such a serious environmental issue. Last year the FAO launched their Global Soil Partnership for Food Security and Climate Change Mitigation http://www.fao.org/nr/water/landandwater_gsp.html

Great suggestion. I’ll be sure to add this category and post related stories on this important issue. Thanks.
